Marc Emery: All About Prison and What Comes Next

By Marc Emery, forward by Jodie Emery, Originally Published Cannabis Culture

Marc decided to write the complete story of his status as a political prisoner in the US federal prison system: what he does, what it's like, his future prospects at Sea-Tac Federal Detention Center in Seattle and wherever he gets sent after sentencing, and the process of returning to Canada.

This letter was written to be copied and sent to everyone who sends him mail so he doesn't have to write it out repeatedly, but he still writes personal messages along with every letter he sends out.

Missing Marc but staying active and getting things done!

Today I got photos from Marc in prison! They were taken during our visit on July 4th, when inmates can buy photographs of themselves with family. We had to choose one of four painted walls as the backdrop, so we picked the Seattle skyline at night.

I was so pleased to get these photos in the mail, and share them on Facebook so people can see how Marc looks and what his inmate clothes are like. This is the first glimpse of Marc in US federal prison for everyone but me and his lawyers. He has lost weight, but he eats everything he can.

BC Hydro to implement Smart Meters, Jodie Emery comments on impact

By Scott Simpson, Vancouver Sun

One of British Columbia's biggest underground industries could find itself short-circuited by a BC Hydro technology upgrade.

Hydro is moving ahead with a plan to replace mechanical electricity meters with smart meters across the province that are expected to make it a lot tougher for indoor marijuana growers to conceal their operations.

Smart meters represent the first major upgrade on conventional analog electricity meters in a half century. Hydro last month issued a request for proposals for companies to bid on installation of new, digital meters as well as the accompanying hardware and software, to serve all of its customers by 2012.

Marc Emery put in solitary confinement

By Tamara Baluja, The Province

B.C.’s self-styled Prince of Pot, Marc Emery, has been put in solitary confinement for “unknowingly” breaking a rule, his wife says.

Jodie Emery told The Province on Wednesday that her husband has been put in Security Housing Unit (SHU) at the SeaTac Federal Detention Centre on June 3 after she recorded a phone conversation with him meant for public broadcast.

“He was immediately remorseful,” said Emery, adding that her husband did not realize he had done anything wrong until he was served an offical citation.

HOW TO HELP FREE MARC EMERY: Download the NEW "Free Marc Emery" information handout! Front page Back page

First of all and most importantly, please be polite and respectful – but very firm – when contacting the following people. Secondly, strongly emphasize that Marc Emery is a Canadian citizen who never went to the USA and carried out his activities in Canada. If he has broken the law in Canada, he should be tried and sentenced in Canada, not sent to a foreign country to be punished under much harsher laws. Try to bring up these important points along with the "Facts About Marc Emery" (listed further below) to help you better explain why Marc Emery should not be imprisoned in the USA:

a) Vancouver police investigated Marc in 2003 and tried to have charges filed in court, but the Crown refused, so the VPD admitted that the USA picked up the file to get harsh punishment for Marc in the USA. The Vancouver police worked with Americans on Canadian soil to create the US case. If Marc couldn't be charged in Canada, he should not be charged in America. b) The US District Attorney arranged a plea deal in January 2008 that would allow Marc to serve his time in Canada, as long as the Conservative government laid charges here in Canada, but the government refused. Again, if the government wouldn't charge or punish Marc in Canada, he should not be charged or punished in America.

POT AND POLITICS

Jodie Emery, Globe and Mail

My husband, Marc Emery, is a Canadian who never went to the United States and never grew or sold marijuana ( 'Prince Of Pot' Sentenced To Five Years In Prison - May 25 ). He sold only cannabis seeds for more than a decade, paid taxes on all income and used the profits to fund political activism.

The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration's press release about Marc's 2005 arrest bragged that it was "a significant blow . to the marijuana legalization movement" because "hundreds of thousands of dollars of Emery' . profits are known to have been channelled to marijuana legalization groups active in the United States and Canada." It's all about politics, not about pot.

In 2008, American authorities offered a plea deal that would allow Marc to serve his time in Canada if he was charged here, but the Conservative government refused. Read more »

By Libby Davies, Rabble.ca

Editor's note: The following exclusive interview, recorded by rabble.ca, took place between Libby Davies, MP for Vancouver East, and Marc and Jodie Emery in January 2010 in Vancouver, days before his extradition was expected to take place. Marc, 52, was extradited to the US on May 20th to serve a five-year prison sentence for shipping marijuana seeds to Americans. This far-ranging interview covers the reasons for Emery's extradition, the war on drugs, Canadian sovereignty, and Marc's previous experience in prison.

Q - This is my first visit to the new Woodward's development. It is amazing to look at the big photograph from the Gastown riots.

Supporters rally as Vancouver pot crusader Marc Emery taken to U.S.

By Stephen Thomson, Georgia Straight

Vancouver’s so-called Prince of Pot is off to the United States to face a potential five-year prison term for allegedly using an on-line business to sell marijuana seeds to customers across the border.

Marc Emery, who was expected to arrive in Washington State today (May 20), will plead guilty as part of a deal reached with U.S. authorities, said his wife, Jodie Emery. He could be sentenced in the next two to three months, she added.

The hope is that he will then be sent to a low-security federal prison in California and seek a transfer back to Canada, she said.

Pot activist Marc Emery on his way to U.S. jail

The Canadian Press

VANCOUVER—Canada's so-called “Prince of Pot” is on his way to the United States to serve a five-year prison sentence for shipping marijuana seeds to Americans.

Marc Emery, 52, pleaded guilty to one charge of drug distribution last year after dropping his fight for extradition to the U.S.

His wife, Jodie Emery, said her husband was being driven from a Metro Vancouver jail to the Washington state border on Thursday morning so he can be handed over to U.S. authorities.

“They will ... drive him down to Seattle to Federal Court where he will make his initial appearance so that they can show that they've got him,” she said.
