Dearest Jodie: A miracle occurred today! For dinner I received the most extraordinary meal, this great salad plate with five fresh green pepper slices, three cauliflower pieces, four broccoli pieces, lettuce, four real tomato wedges, dressings, medium cheddar cheese (grated, the real thing), and three hard boiled eggs. It was spectacular! The first real vegetarian meal I've had.

Snippets of My Conversations With Marc Emery

I communicate with my very close friend and mentor Marc Emery nearly every day while he is being held political prisoner in an American federal prison for selling marijuana seeds from Canada.
 
Despite Marc's miserable circumstances he maintains his sense of humor...which is essential for maintaining ones sanity during difficult times. For example I got the following email from him yesterday and thought it would be good to share with those of you who read this blog. It's very humorous in a morbid sort of way.

The Prince of Pot's U.S. Federal Prison blog # 8 cites a "disturbing series of occurrences" with his mail.
 
In the blog, Marc Emery wrote that a number of items he has sent and that he should have received have gone missing.
 
He mentioned that he decorated an envelope in colour with hand-done calligraphy for a letter to his wife Jodie. Emery wrote that he sent it on July 14 so it would arrive in time for their fourth wedding anniversary on July 23.
 
"But alas, the letter never arrived, and I don't know if you or I will ever know where it went," Emery noted.

Marc Emery Supporters Meet Vic Toews (The Man Who Can Bring Marc Home)

I received a note on my Facebook wall from Mark Radford in Ontario, alerting me to the fact that Public Safety Minister Vic Toews, the man who will decide if Marc can serve his sentence in Canada, was having a meet-and-greet in Toronto on Tuesday, July 27th. It was the perfect opportunity to ask Vic Toews about Marc!
 
The event was hosted by the St. Paul's Conservatives at "The Twisted Kilt" pub, where Conservative Party supporters (and the public) could pay $10 to get in and listen to Vic Toews speak, and then grab a beer or two and mingle amongst the people and influential individuals attending. Read more »

• In Canada, there are three precedents for selling marijuana seeds in Canada -- and two of them were charged and convicted AFTER Marc Emery's 2005 arrest and US extradition request:

        1) In the year case R. v. Hunter in the year 2000, the BC Court of Appeals found that a $200 fine, not jail time, is the appropriate punishment for selling seeds. Ian Hunter was based in Victoria, BC. Read the official decision here.

  1. Marc Emery is a Canadian citizen who never went to the USA as a seed seller. He operated his seed business in Canada at all times, with no American branches or employees.
  2. Marc Emery declared his income from marijuana seed sales on his income tax, and paid over $580,000 to the Federal and Provincial governments from 1999 to 2005.
  3. Marc Emery is the leader of the British Columbia Marijuana Party, a registered political party that has regularly participated in elections.
  4. Marc Emery has never been arrested or convicted of manufacturing or distributing marijuana in Canada, as he only sold seeds.
  5. Marc Emery gave away all of the profits from his seed business to drug law reform lobbyists, political parties, global protests and rallies, court litigation, medical marijuana initiatives, drug rehabilitation clinics, and other legitimate legal activities and organizations.

Dear Jodie: I am now aware of a disturbing series of occurrences with my mail in and out of the prison here at SeaTac Federal Detention Centre. A number of items I send, and that I am due to receive, have gone missing without explanation so far.

You know that for our 4th wedding anniversary on Friday, July 23th, I sent in the mail on Wednesday, July 14th a beautiful envelope decorated on both sides in colour pencil, with a hand-done calligraphy-style written page inside. I sent it in the mail here at SeaTac FDC nine days early so you would be sure to get it in time, for you were to visit me on the day of our anniversary, arriving the Friday evening at your hotel in Seattle just down the street from my prison.
